Here is the latest information our district has regarding tomorrow's planned strike by the BCTF.

Despite marathon bargaining over the weekend and late into the evening on Sunday night it appears that there are significant differences between the BCTF and BCPSEA regarding a settlement offer.  Please see the link (add a link for attached document) for details regarding this.  What this means is that there is a full scale strike on for tomorrow, Tuesday, June 17th.

Provincial Exams:

Provincial exams are proceeding as scheduled.  Please check the Ministry website for schedules.  Belmont has a slightly different schedule which has been emailed out to parents.  Contact the school if you have any questions regarding scheduling of provincial exams.

For the convenience of parents and community members, here are the links to both the BCPSEA and BCTF websites in order to get the latest updates.

During the weekend, the BC Public School Employers' Association and CUPE reached a tentative agreement on a provincial framework agreement for educational support staff. For details on the tentative agreement, and the accompanying BCPSEA news release, please follow the links below:

Dear Parents/Guardians:

As you may know, a student walkout being promoted for the morning of Wednesday, June 4, has received a significant amount of media attention. While the District respects the desire of students to express their views regarding the current labour situation, the proposed walkout raises a number of concerns, particularly with regard to student safety.

 Parents should be aware that:

·   While School District #62 is responsible for the safety of students on school property, student safety cannot be guaranteed for those participating in walkout activities outside school property even if these activities take place during school hours.

·   We do not know who, if anyone, is organizing local walkout activities, and parents should not expect those activities to be supervised by school or district staff.

·    School District #62 strongly encourages students not to participate in the walkout, both to ensure their own safety and to avoid adding further unnecessary and unproductive disruptions to their learning during this already difficult dispute.

We all fully respect the voice of students and their legitimate right to share their concerns, and we do not want to unduly alarm parents or students about the potential risks of participating in the walkout, but it is our shared responsibility to ensure parents and students are aware of those risks.

Yours truly,

Jim Cambridge
