SD62 TEACHER ONLY CANADIAN TO RECEIVE 2012 AMGEN AWARD
LANGFORD – Metchosin Technical Centre’s, Laura Verhoeven, is the only teacher in Canada to receive the 2012 Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence (AASTE). Verhoeven was honoured today for her outstanding ability to inspire students in science education.
“I’m thrilled to win this award and I’m flattered to be recognized for doing a job that many others do so well too”, says Verhoeven. “I really believe in active, project-based learning. When students are physically involved in a learning experience, you can really see a change in how the students themselves understand and retain information.”
The AASTE program was designed to recognize teachers in the K-12 grade levels in public and private schools whose dedication has had a significant impact on the learning and interest of their students.
"Amgen is pleased to recognize extraordinary science teachers in Canada. We believe in the value of science education and hope our commitment to this program will continue to encourage outstanding science teachers to inspire the next generation of scientists”, says Dr. Clive Ward-Able, Executive Director, Research and Development, Amgen Canada.
As part of her award, Verhoeven received $5,000. Metchosin Technical Centre: Pacific Secondary School also received $5,000 to go towards the expansion or enhancement of a school science program, science resources, or the professional development of the school's science teachers.
