A roar of cheers and applause filled Belmont's North Gym as Grade 12 student, Ravi Parmar took to the podium today.
Today's announcement that two new high schools will be coming to the West Shore within the next five years brought everyone to their feet.
"Eight months ago I started a petition calling on the government to replace Belmont with the 2 new schools and with all your support we have gotten over 2500 signatures. We had a walkout, where the community saw how much power students could really create. We didn’t do this for ourselves, we did this for our brothers and sisters and for future generations," said Parmar addressing his classmates, attendees and provincial Education Minister, George Abbott.

After thanking all levels of government, teachers and staff at Belmont as well as community members, Parmar, looking humble concluded that, "The fight for new schools started much before us, so I would like to thank every single person who has supported this plan and has worked hard to get to the point where we are today."
