What is "Core French"?
Core French or French as a Second Language is the study of French as a subject.

How much French instruction does the student receive?
In Grades 5 to 7, students receive approximately 75 minutes per week of instruction in French. When students reach Grade 8, instruction time increases to 180 minutes. This continues through Grade 12.

Can a student who studies Core French learn to speak the language?
Some students who complete this program become bilingual. The majority will increase their ability to communicate effectively in French. Successful completion of Grade 11 French meets the standard entrance requirement for most B.C. and Canadian universities.

Where is Core French offered?
All Elementary and Secondary Schools offer Core French from Grades 4 through 12.

What resources are available for parents of Core French students?
Canadian Parents for French-BC & Yukon Branch is a parent-led, non-profit organization that has worked for more than 30 years to provide French-language educational, social, cultural and sporting activities for youth.
