So you Think You Can Write” Competition

How many budding authors does Journey Middle School have? It seems we have quite a few just waiting for their opportunity to get writing. This year, we held our first ever writing competition loosely based on the Times Colonist writers’ “So you Think you can Write” competition. Students were given three options to choose from:

Option #1 – Write a short story about being somewhere different, “foreign” to you.

Option #2 – Write a poem in any format about your favourite book, a memory, an important event or emotion

Option #3 – Write a short piece about a conflict, something real. Take a point of view and voice your opinion

No one took up Option #3, but we had some great entries for Option#1 and #2. Judges were from the local community. A huge thank you to local authors, Shirley Skidmore, Debra Clay  and  Sooke News Mirror Editor, Pirjo Raits for taking time in their very busy schedules to read and help with the difficult task of selecting the winners.

We are publishing the winners on the school webpage. In addition, we will be publishing all the stories in a small booklet for all students that participated.

So, when you have a spare moment, check out the winning entries on the Student Work section of the website.  I am sure you will find them entertaining. Enjoy!    (and a GREAT JOB once again to all the budding authors!)

Please note – we did not make corrections, edit, etc. The focus of the competition was to encourage students to write and share, and to get started!

On April 17th, Journey's grade 7/8 concert band and strings ensemble travelled to Port Alberni to compete at the Annual Vancouver Island Musicfest.  Given all their hard work and practice of late, it is not at all surprising that they scored a superior platinum rating. Congratulations to all of the performers and their tireless conductors. Thank you to all the volunteers and parent chaperones who made this event possible. We are so proud of you all!

Here is a snap shot for you, the grade 7/8 concert band:

Mrs Bouvier and Mrs Dvorak invite you to the Mindstorm Robotics Club:

Mindstorm Robotics club starts this Thursday afternoon after school.  The club will meet until at least the end of May every Thursday afternoon from 3:00 -4:30.  There is currently no cost for students to participate.  We simply ask that they come with an open mind and be willing to work as a team to solve technical problems.  Our first meeting will involve students learning about how to build a basic robot and get familiar with the different pieces of Lego that are in our kits.

The goal of our meetings right now will be to familiarize students with the process of designing and building different robots for different purposes and to get used to programing the robots with the NXT software.  It is our hope that in the fall we will be able to run a team of grade 7 and 8 students to compete in a Lego League tournament.  Participating in the tournament would involve getting a challenge that students spend several months researching and solving, including the programing  of their robots.

Message from Jim Cambridge,

This is your opportunity to participate in history! How often do you get a chance to name a new school? As part of the process for naming the new secondary school at Royal Bay, the Board of Education has struck a committee to gather suggestions and compile a short list. During the fall consultation sessions, some names were suggested at the New Schools Open House meetings.

The next step is to open up the process to encourage ideas from students, parents, staff and community members. The link below will take you to a page on our new schools blog where you can suggest a name and the rationale for your choice. This blog will be open until April 26. Afterwards, the committee will compile a long list, post the long list on the blog and ask you to vote on your favourite names.
