NEW- Lottery system for kindergarten registration

Due to high demand for kindergarten French Immersion, if a school receives more registrations per category of enrolment priority than the number of available seats, a lottery will take place. The lottery will follow the Student Enrolment Priorities and students will be placed in the order in which they are drawn.

Example: a school has 40 available seats.

– 20 catchment area children with a sibling in the school apply,
– 10 catchment area children apply, and
– 15 non-catchment children apply.

The 20 catchment area children with siblings in the schools will be placed, followed by the 10 catchment area children. A lottery will take place for the 15 non-catchment children for the remaining 10 seats.

A wait list will be established according to the lottery. The lottery process will be based on a school-by-school basis.

Student Enrolment Priorities

  1. re-enrolling students
  2. a catchment area child who has a sibling currently attending the school
  3. a catchment area child
  4. a non-catchment child who has a sibling currently attending the school
  5. a non-catchment child
  6. a non-school district child

These enrolment priorities apply to all new registrations and transfer requests.

Twins: In the event of a draw, one ballot will be entered into the draw for families with twins. If drawn, both twins will be offered placement in the program at the same school.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the lottery work?

When the number of applicants exceeds the number of available seats, a lottery system will take place. Student Enrolment Priorities will apply to the lottery.

When will the results of the lottery be available?

Roughly one week after registration ends.

How many seats are available in each French Immersion school?

While we have a rough idea of how many students will be accepted, we won’t know for sure until all registrations have been received. We try our best to fit as many applicants as possible. This means that we will reconfigure grades and classrooms, so we need to know how many applicants we have first.

Will the results of the lottery be made public?

We can let you know where you fell in the lottery, but we cannot publish the names of other applicants due to privacy concerns.

I already have an older child in the school. If a lottery takes place, does this mean that an out of catchment child will be accepted before my younger child?

No. Your child will be placed before the out of catchment child as per the Student Enrolment Priorities.

Do I need to enter the lottery in addition to registering my child?

No, the system will know once you select French Immersion or Nature Kindergarten during online registration.

Do I need a computer in order to register?

Yes.  If you do not have a computer at home, you can access a computer at any of the following places:

  • Public library
  • A friend or family’s house
  • Use your mobile phone
Do I need an email address to register?

Yes. All correspondence, including the offering of seats and waitlist status, are sent to an applicant’s e-mail address.  This is the same e-mail address used when registering at your local catchment school.  It is important to have access to your e-mail account for school and district correspondence.

Where can I learn more about French Immersion and support for parents from outside organizations?
