Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a system to prepare students in the academic middle for post-secondary eligibility. The Sooke School District offers the AVID program to students in grades 8 through 12 in the Belmont Zone at Spencer Middle School, Dunsmuir Middle School and Belmont Senior High.
In AVID, students learn and develop skills to improve their academic success. Students learn study and organizational strategies, writing to learn skills, and critical question development. As well, students get academic help from peers through tutorials and begin career and post-secondary research. In addition, students participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make going to college seem realistic and attainable.
AVID targets students in the academic middle, typically with GPA’s from 2.0-3.5 (C to A/B), who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential.
