News thumbnail Afterschool Student Pickup

Dear Parents & Guardians:

The student drop off lanes are being used for student pick up after school.  While student drop off in the morning is going well, there have been some problems with student pick up.   The primary concern is that once the student drop off lanes are full, drivers are pulling into and blocking the entrance way.  This raises the concern that school buses are not being permitted to enter.  Further to that, it raises a significant safety concern as emergency vehicles would be prevented from entering the school.

The School District is investigating the possibility of hiring a Traffic Controller to ensure the safe thoroughfare in and out of school.  Until then, we ask you to please not block the entrance into the school parking lot with your vehicle.

Thank you for your anticipated co-operation.

News thumbnail Course Requests In February for the 2012-13 School Year!

It’s hard to believe, but we are in the beginning stages of planning for next year. This involves the students making their course requests for next year, beginning with the grade 7 classes this week (week of January 30th), followed by the grade 8 classes next week (Week of February 6th).

Each homeroom class will be visited by the Mr. Cox, our school counselor. The students will be briefed on the process of requesting course, which will involve visiting the computer lab. A paper copy of the course request sheet as well as the Course Description booklet will be sent home. (These forms are also available in the “Forms” section of this site.) Please make a point of having a conversation with your children regarding their course selection for next year.  Students are strongly urged to make a second choice for each of their elective course.

Once course requests are made, we will be able to determine which courses we are able to offer. From there the master timetable is built, and courses are assigned to students. Please note that most students (due to timetabling constraints) do not get all of their first choices with respect to their elective courses.

Those students who wish to apply for the AVID program can get their applications online, once again, in the Forms section of this website.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the school.

Principal's Message
Hello everyone!
I came to Spencer having begun my teaching career in East Vancouver, where I was the teacher at an Alternate School. My family and I (having family on Vancouver Island) were well aware that there’s “no life like island life”, and moved to Victoria where I was hired as a teacher in Sooke. I have been a vice principal at Dunsmuir, Edward Milne  Community School and a principal at Journey Middle School. My time at Spencer has been very positive, and I look forward to many more years here!

Our school goal is Social Responsibility. We firmly believe that if students feel safe and cared for at school they will perform well academically. Our focus on social responsibility is highlighted in many ways, including our support of the Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement and our use of restitutional practice to support good student behaviour.

Over the next few years students and parents will see Spencer come to life as we embark on a program to 'show what we know' with student created murals and artwork appearing throughout the school.
Let the show begin!
