Hello and Welcome to Spencer!

I hope everyone is having a great summer and excited to begin or return to Spencer Middle School.

Tuesday, September 8, 2015 will be a half day for all Spencer students beginning at 8:55am and ending at approximately noon.  Our Grade 8 students will find their name and Advisory posted in the foyer by the office, the theatre and in the “mall” area.  When the bell rings to begin the day, all grade 8 students will report to their Advisory class and their Advisory teacher will take care of them for the day.

Our new Grade 6 and 7 students will be meeting in the gym.  They will find their name posted on the wall with their Advisory teacher ready to greet them.  When the bell rings to begin the day, all grade 6 and 7 students will walk with their Advisory teacher to their classroom where they will spend the morning.

The first day is simply an information session for all students.  Each student will meet their teacher, settle into the classroom and be given information to take home to parents at the end of the day.  They will go through their timetable and will be given an agenda to use for the year.  There is no need to bring all the school supplies on the first day – they will just need a pen or pencil.  A list of suggested school supplies has been posted on the Spencer website.

If you are dropping off or picking up your child on any given day, I would encourage you to pick a location away from the school and away from the bus location in order to avoid congestion.  As you can imagine, there will be a lot of cars around the school and we want to make the safety of our students a priority.  For those students who are taking the bus, please remind them to look at the bus number when they get on the bus to go to school: the same bus will take them home after the ½ day of school is over.

Mr. Kelly, Mr. Smyth and I, as well as the entire Spencer team look forward to seeing your children on the 8th!

Sincerely,

Terry Honer
Principal, Spencer Middle School

Principal's Message
Hello everyone!
I came to Spencer having begun my teaching career in East Vancouver, where I was the teacher at an Alternate School. My family and I (having family on Vancouver Island) were well aware that there’s “no life like island life”, and moved to Victoria where I was hired as a teacher in Sooke. I have been a vice principal at Dunsmuir, Edward Milne  Community School and a principal at Journey Middle School. My time at Spencer has been very positive, and I look forward to many more years here!

Our school goal is Social Responsibility. We firmly believe that if students feel safe and cared for at school they will perform well academically. Our focus on social responsibility is highlighted in many ways, including our support of the Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement and our use of restitutional practice to support good student behaviour.

Over the next few years students and parents will see Spencer come to life as we embark on a program to 'show what we know' with student created murals and artwork appearing throughout the school.
Let the show begin!

Life at Spencer

We’re up and running after a good Spring Break. The band went down to Anaheim to perform at the World Heritage Festival, and did very well. The kids had a great time at Universal Studios, Disneyland and California Adventure. The experience of performing at the Festival was amazing!
