The NA’TSA’MAHT Indigenous Education Department hosted the 3rd Annual Grade 12 Land-based Celebration, in partnership with T’Sou-ke Nation, Sc’ianew Nation and the YMCA Camp Thunderbird earlier this month. South Island Graduation

Over 100 students and staff from SD 61, 62, 63, W̱SÁNEĆ, and the Francophone school district came together as a South Island family with Role Models, Knowledge Keepers and Elders. The activities of the day, from drumming to canoeing, cedar harvesting to art & beading, provided rich opportunities for participants to engage with and learn about local Coast Salish & Nuu-chah-nulth cultures.

The inclusion of traditional teas, locally sourced salmon, and songs from local Elders further added to the cultural experience of the event.

Acknowledging Auntie Jannie Hansen and Elder Jackie DeYaeger from T’Sou-ke Nation for their welcoming and cultural guidance as hosts of the territory. Additionally, recognizing the guidance and consultation provided by local First Nations and their Elders: Hank Chipps, Rick Peter, Janet Hansen, Jackie DeYaeger  shows a commitment to ongoing collaboration and respect for Indigenous knowledge and protocols.  Lastly, recognizing the YMCA Camp Thunderbird for their partnership in providing the facility, staff, and supplies.
