On behalf of our district, I want to share that we are holding the students, staff, families, and the entire community of Tumbler Ridge in our thoughts. When a tragedy of this magnitude occurs, it is natural to feel unsettled and to question the world around you, including your own safety and the safety of those you love.
Please know that our schools are prepared, steady, and focused on supporting your children. Our Safe Schools Team, school administrators, and district leadership are fully engaged and working closely together to ensure students and staff have the care, resources, and guidance they may need. If conversations arise in classrooms, they will be handled thoughtfully, gently, and in age-appropriate ways.
We understand that families may also have questions about safety protocols. The safety of students, staff and visitors to our building remains our highest priority. Information about our critical incident response procedures is available on our website: Critical Incidents. Your child participates in safety drills throughout the year at every grade level so that, should a situation arise, everyone understands their role and knows exactly what to do. These proactive measures are in place to provide calm, coordinated and confident responses when needed.
In the coming days, we encourage families be mindful of the media content children may encounter or share. Exposure or repeated or graphic coverage can heighten anxiety. Maintaining normal routines and providing reassurance at home can help children feel grounded and secure.
If at any time you feel your child may benefit from additional support, please reach out to the classroom teacher or school counsellor. Additional resources are available on our website under Community Supports & Resources.
Compassion, steadiness, and connection are essential in the wake of tragedy. We appreciate the care and support you continue to provide to your children and to each other.
Sincerely,
Paul Block
Superintendent
