Message from the Superintendent: Welcome Back!

Date

Hello families,

Welcome back to what will be a different, but great year in SD62! I can’t tell you how excited we are to be welcoming students back into our schools and classrooms. While I know this has been a very difficult time for families and many of you are still worried and anxious about schools reopening, I want you to know that we are following every health and safety precaution set out for us by the Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry.

Over the past two weeks, you have received a lot of information from both the district and your child’s school. I know it’s a lot of information to go through, understand and consider. I want to personally thank you for being patient and providing us with important feedback.

Health and Safety

We have been working hard over the summer to come up with plans that give parents options for the return of your children to our schools. The safety of students and staff has always been our top priority. Collaborating with the Ministry of Education, the Provincial Health Office, Island Health and the BC Centre for Disease Control, we have introduced new protocols. From learning groups, to rules around mask use, to hiring additional custodial staff, we are doing our best to keep our schools as safe as possible. For your information, please take a look at our:

Learning Options: Survey

We received more than 9000 electronic survey responses from families – thank you! From the data collected, more than 80% of SD62 families are planning to send their child to school for in-class learning. For some families, we recognize that sending your child to full time in-class learning is not a good fit at this time. From serious health concerns to the anxiety that the uncertain time presents, we are here to work with families to get their child back to learning safely and smoothly. Click here to see the learning options available for families in SD62.

To assist you with the details of the return for your school, you will be receiving specific information from your school principal. If you did not get a chance to complete the survey, please connect with your child’s school as quickly as possible.

While the first week back at school will look a little bit different for all families, we share our excitement again with you. If you are new to the school district – welcome! To our returning families, it’s great to see you again and we thank you for the trust you place in our schools and staff responsible for your children during the school year. On behalf of all SD62 employees, welcome to the 2020/2021 school year!

Kind regards,

Scott Stinson
