As you get closer to this important milestone, there are a few key things you should take care of before you permanently leave the school to make your transition after graduation smooth and stress-free.
Know Your Personal Education Number (PEN)
Your Personal Education Number (PEN) is your unique student ID in BC.
- You’ll need it for transcripts, certificates, and future education applications
- You can find it in your MyEducation BC (MyEd) account or on your report card/learning updates
Tip: Write it down somewhere safe or save a screenshot.
Save Everything from Your MyEd Account
Your MyEd account will only stay active for a limited time after you graduate (max 6 months).
Before you lose access, make sure you:
- Save or screenshot your report cards / Learning Updates
- Save any other important documents
- If you have an IEP or a psychoeducational assessment, please request a copy from your case manager before leaving school, as these records are only kept until you turn 21
- Make sure your mailing address, phone numbers and email address are all current
After you leave the system, schools only keep your Permanent Student Record, which includes required legal documents but may not include your Learning Updates or report cards.
If you need help logging in, contact your school’s office or clerical staff.
If you need help accessing your MyEd account, please contact your school’s clerical team before summer break. Staff availability is limited during the summer, which may make it difficult to get assistance. Additionally, MyEd is unavailable for approximately one week in August due to a system blackout while data is updated, and no support can be provided during that time.
Transcripts
In BC, schools do NOT issue official transcripts.
You must order them yourself through the provincial system:
- Use the StudentTranscripts Service
- You will need your PEN
Good to know:
- If you’re a current student or graduated within the last 6 months:
- You can send transcripts to post-secondary institutions for free (25 or less)
- After that, or for additional copies:
- There is a fee (typically around $10 per order)
Always check the official site for the most up-to-date details.
Graduation Certificate (Dogwood Diploma)
Your Graduation Certificate (Dogwood Diploma) is issued by the Province of BC (including French Dogwood if completed)
- It is usually sent to your school in late summer (August)
- Schools will then contact you to pick it up or mail if needed (timing may vary—often September)
Important:
- You will receive one original copy. In most cases, the school will contact you by email when it is ready for pickup. If needed, it can be mailed to you. Please ensure that your contact information in MyEd, including your address, email, and phone number, is accurate before you leave the school.
- If lost or damaged, you must order a replacement through the province (fee applies, usually ~$10)
- You will need your PEN
Where to Order Transcripts & Certificates
Use the official BC government site:
This is the only official way to:
- Send transcripts to universities/colleges
- Order extra copies
- Request replacement graduation certificates
