Supporting Students with Healthy Food at School

Date

Did you know that across our schools, we ensure that students have access to food at school if they need it? Making sure students are well-nourished helps them focus, learn, and thrive throughout the school day.

We partner with Flourish! School Food Society to make healthy food available to students. Each school delivers the program a little differently depending on the needs of the school community and the facilities available on site.

In addition to providing food, Flourish! offers engaging food programming that helps students build valuable skills and knowledge. Students may learn how to harvest foods, prepare simple recipes, and explore where their food comes from.

Food served in our schools is typically at least 50% locally sourced, helping support local farmers and producers while providing fresh, nutritious options for students. Through food rescue initiatives, surplus food from local partners is also redirected to schools, helping reduce food waste while ensuring more students have access to healthy food.

An important part of the program is introducing students to new foods while building food literacy, helping them understand how food is grown, prepared, and shared.

Many of our schools also maintain school gardens, which contribute to school food programming when produce is ready for harvest. These gardens are dynamic learning spaces where students can connect with nature, food, and hands-on learning.

This work is made possible by passionate staff, volunteers, and partners across the district and at Flourish! School Food Society. Ultimately, our students are the greatest beneficiaries, gaining access to nourishing food and meaningful learning experiences.

Local individuals and organizations are important partners in food programming. If you or your organization would like to get involved, please contact: matthew@flourishschoolfood.ca
