January 2023 - New School Naming - Thought Exchange
The Sooke School District Board of Education would like your help naming the new elementary school in South Langford, slated to open in 2025. The proposed school name should reflect our community, inspire local pride and to help give our school an identity. School names can recognize and reflect culture, heritage, and landscape. Your thoughts and ratings will help us to bring forward 3 possible names for the Board to consider. Final choice on a name rests with the Board. Once you have taken part in the Thought Exchange please revisit often to rate other suggestions for a name.
Here are some things from our board policy on naming schools for you to consider as you prepare to share your thoughts:
"Except where otherwise determined by the Board, new schools will be named in reference to geographical characteristics, local Indigenous culture and language or historical names. If a school is to be named in honour of a person, consent of the individual will be obtained. In cases where a school is to be named after a deceased person, except one who was renowned, agreement from close surviving relatives will be sought."
